Clickbait is content - usually a headline, thumbnail, or caption - designed to provoke curiosity or outrage strongly enough that people click through, often without delivering on the implied promise. Phrases like “You won’t believe what happened next” or exaggerated thumbnails are classic examples.
While clickbait can generate short-term traffic spikes, it typically damages trust and increases bounce rates when the content doesn’t match expectations. Platforms including Facebook and YouTube have actively worked to penalise clickbait in their algorithms. For brands, the better approach is writing headlines that are compelling and accurate - creating curiosity without misleading.
