What is shadowbanning?

When a platform quietly limits a user's content visibility without notifying them

Shadowbanning is the practice of a platform silently reducing a user’s content visibility - making posts less discoverable in search, hashtags, or feeds - without informing the account holder. From the user’s perspective, everything appears normal: they can still post and see their own content. But to others, that content has effectively been suppressed.

Platforms typically deny the practice, but many creators have observed drops in reach that point to some form of suppression, often linked to violations of community guidelines, spam-like behaviour, or the use of flagged hashtags. For brands and creators, a suspected shadowban is usually resolved by avoiding banned hashtags, reducing posting frequency, and ensuring content aligns with platform rules.
