Social Media Image Sizes: The Complete 2026 Cheat Sheet

Getting image sizes wrong is one of the most avoidable mistakes in social media content production. An image that’s the right size looks sharp and fills the frame correctly. The wrong size gets cropped in the wrong place, appears blurry, or leaves awkward whitespace around the subject.

This cheat sheet covers every major format for every major platform as of 2026. Bookmark it.

Instagram image sizes

Profile photo

  • Size: 320 × 320 px
  • Displayed as: A circle. Keep the subject centred with clear margins - the corners will be cropped.
  • Tip: Upload at 320px even though Instagram displays it smaller. It will look sharper on high-DPI screens.

Feed post (square)

  • Size: 1080 × 1080 px
  • Aspect ratio: 1:1
  • Note: The standard feed post format. Works across all placements and is the safest choice if you’re unsure.

Feed post (portrait)

  • Size: 1080 × 1350 px
  • Aspect ratio: 4:5
  • Note: Takes up more vertical space in the feed, which often leads to higher engagement. The maximum portrait ratio Instagram allows.

Feed post (landscape)

  • Size: 1080 × 566 px
  • Aspect ratio: 1.91:1
  • Note: The widest format Instagram supports. Often used for panoramic or cinematic content.

Story

  • Size: 1080 × 1920 px
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16
  • Safe zone: Keep important content in the middle 1080 × 1420 px to avoid being covered by the UI at top and bottom.

Reel

  • Size: 1080 × 1920 px
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16
  • Note: Same dimensions as a Story. The cover image shown on the grid should be treated as a 1080 × 1080 px square crop from the centre.

Carousel post

  • Size: 1080 × 1080 px (square), 1080 × 1350 px (portrait), or 1080 × 566 px (landscape)
  • Note: All slides in a carousel must use the same aspect ratio. Square is the most consistent choice.

Highlights cover

  • Size: 1080 × 1920 px
  • Displayed as: A circle cropped from the centre. Design the cover with the icon or subject centred.

TikTok image sizes

Profile photo

  • Size: 200 × 200 px minimum; 400 × 400 px recommended
  • Displayed as: A circle.

Video cover / thumbnail

  • Size: 1080 × 1920 px
  • Aspect ratio: 9:16
  • Safe zone: Keep text and key visuals in the middle third - the top and bottom areas are covered by the UI when the video is playing.

In-feed image post

  • Size: 1080 × 1920 px (portrait) or 1080 × 1080 px (square)
  • Note: TikTok supports static image posts and carousels in addition to video.

Facebook image sizes

Profile photo

  • Size: 170 × 170 px (desktop); 128 × 128 px (mobile)
  • Upload at: 170 × 170 px minimum for clarity across devices.

Cover photo

  • Size: 820 × 312 px (desktop); 640 × 360 px (mobile)
  • Tip: Design for 820 × 312 px but keep key content in the central 640 × 312 px area so it doesn’t get cropped on mobile.

Feed post image

  • Size: 1200 × 630 px
  • Aspect ratio: 1.91:1
  • Note: This is the standard shared image size. Facebook may recompress images, so upload the highest quality version you have.
