What is an Instagram profile mockup?
An Instagram profile mockup is a realistic preview of what an Instagram profile will look like - including the profile photo, username, bio, follower counts, highlights and grid of posts. It lets you (or your client) see exactly how the account will appear before any changes go live.
Mockups are used by social media managers to pitch new profile aesthetics to clients, by designers building brand guidelines, and by agencies presenting content strategies. A good mockup removes ambiguity: instead of describing what a rebrand will look like, you show it.
Why use a mockup instead of editing the real profile?
Making live changes to a client’s Instagram profile to get approval is risky - you might accidentally publish something unpolished, or the client might see a half-finished state. Mockups let you iterate freely and only touch the real account once everyone has signed off.
They’re also much faster than building a Photoshop template or a Figma file from scratch. A dedicated mockup tool handles all the layout and UI - you just fill in the content.
How to create an Instagram profile mockup with Mockupduck
Mockupduck is a browser-based mockup generator - no download, no design experience required. Here’s how to create an Instagram profile mockup in under five minutes.
Step 1: Choose a template
Head to the Instagram mockups page and pick the template that suits your needs. Mockupduck has several options:
- Instagram Profile - the full profile view with photo, bio, stats, highlights and the first few rows of posts
- Instagram Post - a single feed post in context
- Instagram Story - a 9:16 full-screen story
- Instagram Grid - a close-up view of the post grid
For a full profile mockup, choose “Instagram Profile”.
Step 2: Fill in the profile details
Once the builder opens, work through the fields on the left:
- Upload a profile photo (PNG or JPG)
- Enter the username and display name
- Write the bio - include line breaks if needed
- Set the follower, following and post counts
- Add highlight covers and titles if relevant
The preview on the right updates in real time as you type.
Step 3: Add your grid images
Upload the images you want to appear in the post grid. These don’t need to be final - even rough placeholder images help communicate the visual direction. The mockup will arrange them in the same three-column grid format Instagram uses.
Step 4: Download or share for review
Once you’re happy with the result, you have two options:
Download as PNG - Export the mockup at standard or 2x retina resolution. You can then drop it into a presentation or email it to your client.
Send a review link - This is faster and more professional. Add the mockup to a workspace, mark it “ready for review”, and send your client a magic sign-in link. They open a single page showing all your mockups, can leave comments on each one, and never have to create an account. Learn more about the approval workflow.
Tips for a convincing Instagram profile mockup
Use real content wherever possible. The closer your placeholder content is to the final brand voice and visual style, the more useful the mockup becomes as an approval tool.
Match the follower counts to reality. If your client already has an account, use their real numbers. If this is a new account, a round number like 1,200 or 4,500 looks more natural than 1,000 or 5,000.
Use a consistent grid aesthetic. Even if you only have three or six images, try to pick ones that represent the intended visual direction - same colour palette, same subject matter. This makes the grid preview meaningful.
Create a Dark Mode version too. Mockupduck has a Dark Mode template that shows how the profile looks with Instagram’s dark theme enabled. Many reviewers use dark mode exclusively, so it’s worth including both.
